These 16 cards — four in each suit — represent personalities, people, or aspects of ourselves. Knowing how to read them is a genuine skill, and one that dramatically improves your readings once mastered.
The Four Court Card Ranks
Pages – The Student Energy
Pages represent beginners, young people, new ideas, or the early stage of a situation. They are curious, eager, and sometimes naive. A Page often signals: something new is beginning, or you need to approach a situation with fresh eyes.
Knights – The Doer Energy
Knights are action-takers — sometimes reckless, sometimes focused, always moving. They indicate momentum, pursuit, and sometimes impatience. The Knight of Wands charges ahead with fire; the Knight of Cups pursues love with idealism.
Queens – The Embodied Energy
Queens represent mature, internalised mastery. They have fully integrated the energy of their suit into their personality. The Queen of Swords has sharp intellectual clarity; the Queen of Pentacles embodies practical, grounded abundance.
Kings – The Mastery Energy
Kings represent the highest external expression of their suit's energy. They are in command, authoritative, and established. The King of Cups masters his emotions without suppressing them; the King of Wands leads with charisma and vision.
Reading Court Cards as People vs. Energies
One of the biggest insights in Tarot is recognising that Court Cards can represent three things: a literal person in your life, an energy you need to embody, or an aspect of your own personality. Context is everything.
When I see the Queen of Wands in a reading, I ask: Is this describing a dynamic woman in the client’s life, or is it calling my client to step into her own confident, creative power?
